Shimano Derailleur Cable
Has anyone ever had a crank-ARM snap in two?
I decided to take advantage of the mild weather today, and riding my bike home from work today (26 miles). When I ca 2:01 home, grabbed the front derailleur's cable, no big deal, as I will be treated with worse before (or so I thought). Then with five or so miles left, the left side crank arm go literally torn in half. Soooooo, I bowl game the rest of the way back home. My question is when I have to go (Try to) replace the crank-arm assembly, I should give a chance with a different set of aluminum or look after an armed steel. I had never happen before this, and I do not want it to happen again, 'cause I almost lost control in the middle of a busy intersection. It is on a Raleigh 26 "frame, and it's Shimano Brand. Press-Fit-on style with 3 courses. The wheel is about 15 years old, otherwise in good shape. What is the best approach? Any hints or advice for this situation would be very grateful, thank you!
Yeah .... it happens. Not nearly as much today as before, but have come for bike components a very long way in the last 10-15 Years. I have picked up a left crank arm Kooka, and the right side of an old Sugino. Today's cranks are much better, though, and you should not worry about the use an aluminum crankcase. It helps if you "spin" faster in a lower gear as opposed to "mash" into a higher gear, but really most cranks will handle it. You are much more likely to snap a chain as a crank arm. Also, most cranks now use a spline-fit interface instead of the earlier square Cone press fit like your bike has ...... that helps a lot. If you buy a new crank, you will find a square, if you will, but I would suggest a modern Style. This means that you must buy a new bottom bracket as well. If you only want to replace the crank, you can do that. Look for http://www.aebike.com some, and all the bike shop can be for you (so that you may not be able to fit the style, but you can get). Sorry ... bummer when that happens, and you're right, is that sudden loss of control and balance on the bike scary! Fortunately for you, that you do not crash and slices open his leg.
