Road Bike Tires on a Mountain Bike?
I bought a nice Trek mountain bike a year or so ago, and have since moved to busy Chicago. Rather than going out and buying a road bike, would it be possible just to put thinner, slicker tires on my Trek for a nicer ride? If i do this would I have to buy a thinner wheel as well? Or should I just stick with my thick wheel, and get slicker tires?
Yes, get slicks and use your current rims.
I have a Trek 4900, which I use as my road bike. I started out with knobby 26X2.1 tires, and swapped them with 26X1.5 slick tires. It makes an incredible difference & makes it feel like a totally different bike.....way fast. However, with my hardtail the ride is a little more harsh because there's less tire cushion.

They seem to work fine and have no signs of wear after using them for a couple of months.
The only real pain in the neck part is installing them. The slick tires fit so snug on the rims that it is a fight to get them on. It takes me at least a 1/2 hour to get them on the bike. Make sure to get some good, strong tire levers before putting them on.
