Public Speaking: Stage Fright Does Have a grip on you?
No one has ever died from stage fright or speaking in public, but I have more than once at parties or other social gatherings is when people find out what I do, "I would speak to a group rather than die"! For many of us, just the thought of speaking in front of people is appalling, and oh so uncomfortable! We would just rather not put us through this kind of fear.
Have you ever had any of these symptoms before or while speaking to a group? Dry mouth, narrow neck, sticky or shaky hands, stomach flat, accelerated heart rate, weak knees, a feeling of fear? Can you think of more? You are not alone. get In fact, many of the most successful performers and public speakers in the world Stage fright, so you are in good company. I have my own theories as to why the phenomenon is so universal. I believe that very few of us have much, if at all to express encouragement to our authentic self, if we were growing up. If we spoke our minds, expressed our opinion to share our beliefs, were through verbal or let our feelings show, we were the object of ridicule, criticism, and for some, more serious forms of silencing. Therefore, we feel will be very vulnerable if we (or we put ourselves) observed on the spot and heard from people who judge or even reject us.
If you are one This "I would rather die!" reluctant speakers to speak to a group must, because your job requires you to do so, or to your career, or a more effective leader, please be assured that you are a powerful, be confident, relaxed and engaging communicator ahead, even if you are shy or extremely nervous before a speech by humans. Great speak in starts with a valuable message that you want to give you, or a strong Convinced something important to. If you have, you're well on your way!
Although we can trace much of this fear, vulnerable to psychological roots and personal history, you can learn to manage, even masters of this phenomenon called "Stage Fright" or "Performance Anxiety". But the first thing you have to accept this: You can not leave the symptoms! In fact, you have probably already noted, that the more you try, the more they will feel! This fact is one of the most frustrating and disheartening aspects of trying to conquer this common, very human suffering. So what can you do?
With a few principles to be mindful of, and different strategies (see below), alone or in combination, and with practice you will look and sound and, ultimately, be safe, and the command when you are in the throws of stage fright symptoms. Note with the symptoms of Practice more than likely decrease, but they are not always completely gone. However, you can become as familiar friends to help - to motivate and connect.
3 Essential Points remember to -
The more you in the first Are able to focus what you want to help - What usually comes from your core values and your beliefs, the less you will focus on (as you look, how you sound, worrying about what your audience think about you). This is a long way towards helping you less become self-conscious over time.
Much of anticipatory second stage fright and they are significantly after the first minute or two of your to reduce presentation. Speakers In the hours and moments before a potentially stressful situation, you can actually use the experience to help you prepare.
3rd The symptoms you feel in your body are forms of energy, a little adrenaline thrown in for good measure. They can be used to your advantage. If you are not familiar with these sensations, or, if they register as uncomfortable and think they are bad and shouldn 't be there, or that you should be able, it is removed, then your frustration will grow and you will to resist them. This will now be your focus, what really lead to a narrowing in your body make you look stiff and cramped. Your attention is not on the presentation, but instead seeks to get rid of your stage fright. Your audience will pick this up right away and a steep decrease your credibility.
Here is the great paradox: If you feel the energy of the increase in (the symptom), where it can seem when you allow and welcome it, instead of fighting it (you always lose a battle!) you will be naturally more accessible, engaging, genuine, authentic and left to concentrate on what important: the connection with your audience, and say what you want in a way that will make a difference, say for value added to your audience. It is useful to recall in case of stage fright that the symptoms are not bad, they are simple. They are the result of a very ancient (reptilian) brain response known as "fight or flight "when the danger is most present.
Bottom line: You are not really in "danger", your Body is responding as if it is. If you can learn to not be alarmed by the feelings they realize what they are and their energy to encourage (which turn stimulates your handset), you are now in control, not the symptoms.
All this is definitely easier said than done, so be Coaches and a lot of practice are two of the most important strategies for a confident nature and natural speakers.
Here are a few more try. Not all of them work for you, but with trial and error you will find your own recipe for success.
In the run- the presentation:
• Be very well prepared, but do not remember! Script by heart sound learned a is canned and contrived and bring your authenticity and credibility of the factor several notches. If you do not know your subject or material well enough to to improvise with minimal notes (if any), as you are not ready! (Not to mention the unpleasant and embarrassing moment of forgetfulness "lines" - What you probably if you are nervous). Imagine all the energy and concentration, which tries to remember is a script. This is not where you want your Focus to be!
• Join a Speaking Club, workshop, class or hire a coach for extra practice, feedback and advice.
• Do you know your senses and add the value you want, you listeners. Have confidence in your message!
• Know who your audience will be ahead. Find.
• If possible, spend some time in casual conversation with at least a few people in the audience just before your presentation to relax. You can even reference in your presentation to facilitate the conversation a personal and relaxed delivery.
• Anticipate tough questions or challenges what you say.
• Organize Your notes and put them on index cards or
• Prepare visuals and props to help you in your presentation that also serve as cues for. This is a healthy little crutch, and keep your audience attentive, but do not overdo it! They want the people you most care not the wall, the flip chart or PowerPoint screen!
• Begin your presentation with a real question to your audience right at the . Engage
• Practice, practice, practice OUT LOUD in front of others or a video camera. Both of you real and immediate feedback.
• Learn and practice the art of listening.
• Start some kind of body awareness program such as yoga, strength training, Pilates, Dance, martial arts. They will help you learn to be grounded, balanced, relaxed, physically conditioned and comfortable in his own skin at the same concentration on the here and now. "
• Warm up your voice and stretch your body, practice ground and slow breathing controlled.
As we speak
• When you shake your legs, remember gravity and feel your feet on the ground.
• If you are using a microphone, do not try that in your hand, hold it in the first minutes. In fact, agree A mic-clip, if you walk or move the stage floor. This will reduce tension and free your hands and body.
• Avoid the Notes on thin paper. The audience will see the paper shaking. If you must use notes, use three of five cards or prepare a visually stunning yet minimal (very little text) Powerpoint or Keynote presentation.
• Eye contact with famous people in the audience and attentive listener. This will immediately connect.
• Involve your audience if you can (ask questions, they get to the business to participate in a short). This is more talk to your target audience and will help even more of a Conversation than a speech.
• Do not try to stand in one place, unless you're on a podium with a microphone stationary. If you can not arrange to have a podium mic or stationary, you will learn better in your body, in turn, help your audience will more comfort and attentive. This will be the practice, but worth the effort!
• Use natural hand movements (the Way you would loose in a conversation with your best friend), to help keep your body.
• Say slower than you are used to. This will help to ground you and your energy and hold in your body.
There are So here to absorb a lot, I know. And to deepen even more, a masterful speaker and moderator, but these tips together with an attitude of compassion and self- genuine desire to connect with others and share what is most important to you are you will get a long way in the administration and finally address the symptoms have so many hiding places in the back of the room or behind their desks. Mastering any skill requires patience and persistence. Enjoy the challenge and always remember what the great director John Ford once said: "You can speak well if your tongue can the message be sent to your heart."
