Dog Tail Docking and Ear Cropping
In the Roman days, tail docking was used because it was believed that it prevented rabies and other diseases. In the Eureopean Georgian times,
tail docking was done to alleviate a financial strain. A tax had been placed on working dogs that had tails so the owner's would dock the dog's tail
to keep from having to pay yet another tax. So, is tail docking and ear cropping a necessary thing?
I suppose "necessary" is in the mind of the dog owner and the purpose for which the dog is used. For a dog whose main lifestyle is to stay inside and
be a loyal family pet, tail docking probably is not necessary. If however, the dog is used for hunting, ratting, or herding, tail docking can be beneficial. Oh yeah,
there's also the controversial "show dog" aspect. Although there seems to be no stringent regulation on whether or not a dog's been cropped and/or docked to be in
the shows, stiff penalties are placed on the ones who are not. Tail cropping is done for preventative, therapeutic, or cosmetical purposes. Today, most of the
tail docking, seems to be mainly cosmetic. Of the groups of dogs that are typically docked and cropped, we only do it because it has been such a traditional
practice that our animal would look odd not having it done.
Preventative measures would stand true for breeds that hunt, rat, or herd. The tail of a hunting dog, rapidly swaying back and forth in the thick brush and
thickets, is more prone to burrs and hitting their tails on limbs and tree trunks. So, for this breed, docking the tail can prevent tail injuries, which by the way, are very
difficult to treat and manage. Terriers were bred to hunt fox and other vermin, so crawling into tiny holes with a bushy wagging tail can also create the
potential for injury. Herding dogs run the risk of catching their tails in the gates when they have rounded up their herd to the corral, so this breed can
also benefit from the tail being docked. So, if you own a dog that fits these requirements then tail docking is probably the best option for the dog.
Many countries, pressured by Animal Activists, have banned the practice of tail docking and ear cropping. Some of them have instituted fines, jail time
and banned the dog from being in any dog shows. Vets who still continue to practice docking/cropping, run the risk of fines, jail time and having their
license revocked. Ironically, since Sweden banned these practices in 1989, there has been a dramatic increase in tail injuries. For the Pointer breed
the rise has been as much as 51%.
Although tail docking, if done properly between 10-14 days of the puppies life, is said to be painfree, that's still a debatable subject. However, I can't
imagine that it's any more painful than spaying or neutering. The fact is that when it's done so early, many breeders who do the procedure themselves, say
that a sleeping puppy will not even wake. As far as the argument about the "phantom pain", I personally find it hard to imagine that anyone has jumped
inside the dog's head to find out how he remembers something he did not even know he had. I doubt at 10-14 days he even knew what a tail was. However, the
controversy still goes on and the irritional thoughts will continue to go round. But, with many countries now banning the practice altogether, you can
see the power that the Animal Rights Activists hold. I am not against animal rights or the ethical treatment of animals, but I am against any group
that feels it has so much power that it can force others to follow it's beliefs.
So, then there is ear cropping. Now, for this, it is said that it is a painful procedure done under anesthetic. The risk of infection is high and many vets
are poorly versed on the proper way to crop and the pup has to return later to go through the procedure again. Cropping is more for the cosmetic purpose
than anything. Most dog shows will penalize greatly for uncropped ears. Of course, most Doberman owners would find it difficult to imagine that their guard dog,
"Psycho" was trying to scare off an unwanted visitor looking like "Goofy" and his ears flopping in the wind. Ear cropping was started because it made the
guard dog look intimidating. Long, floppy ears do not do much to scare potential thieves off. There is a lot of controversy on this subject too. Some say, ear cropping
interferes with the natural communication skills of the dog. Dogs do communicate with their tails and ears, so I might give them this one.
Docking and cropping in the U.S. is still the right of the owner. That is until the Activists begin to wage war here too. For me, I will think about the
reason I have the dog and choose based on that criteria. If I don't plan to hunt, rat or herd with my dog, I probably don't need these things done. When
I get that Great Dane I would like to have, he might look a little strange to many people because he will not fit the standard look they expect. That will
be okay though, he won't have to impress anyone but me and him.
